cannot access Win 2000 desktop

By dcunningham ·
User on the NT based LAN has 2 nodes in his office. One for his Win 2000 desktop with a printer attached and the other for his Win 98 laptop. He is a member of the local and the domain administrators group and signs on to both machines as the same user. The win 2000 desktop has the disk formatted as NTFS. When I share a folder on the Win 2000 desktop then try to map the drive on the win 98 laptop it asks for a password for the share \\whatever\IPC$ AND when I attempt to add the HP printer attached to the win 2000 desktop as a new printer on the win 98 laptop by browsing the network to the win 2000 machine and try to expand to the printer it asks for the password for \\whatever\IPC$.
What is the problem?

Using Server Manager, select Shares to show all shares on a particular computer.Four shares should be under the sharename label.shares that contain $ characteris appended to a share name the share becomes a hidden share, adding a level of security, which means that the share is assigned a password.
To disable
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\parameters\AutoShareServer and change the key value to 0.It will be necessary to add the REG_DWORLD value for AutoShareServer and assign a value of 0 to disable (1 to enable),then reboot.

easier way to do it is in 2000, simply go to the share and right click, click permissions and make sure that he has permissions to get into his own stuff, otherwise you will recieve that message, only Administrator shows up by default, sharing is not enough for win2k.
Good Luck,
