Cannot access Windows NT server manager if PDC is offline

By tom.morris ·
Hello. Still running NT 4.0 domains. Have a situation where the PDC for a domain has crashed, not sure if it can be revived. This domain has 2 BDC servers. However, with the PDC offline, I find that I cannot open Windows NT Server manager (can't find PDC, etc). Since I can't open Windows NT Server manager to promote one of the BDC servers to PDC...what next? Am I missing something? Any other way to promote a BDC in this situation?

Thanks.

Hopefuly you can get to the Server Manager on one of the 2 BDCs. If not then your domain was never healthy. From either one of these boxes you SHOULD be able to promote the server to a PDC. I don't recall there being any command line tools for doing this. The only other option might be to build a PDC for the domain but I'm not usre that's going to work either since you have issues there now.

Best of luck.

Log on locally to either one of the BDC's to run server manager, or try to run this from the command line srvmgr.exe \\bdcname, if you need to run it from a workstation.
