Cannot Acess WEB using MSN or AOL

    Locked

    by bk@rad ·

I am presently using Windows 95 and MSN internet access on a computer at my office. Ihave been unable to access the Web on both AOL and MSN. I can receive mail on AOL but cannot on MSN. Several people have told me that I have to reinstall windowsfrom scratch. This is not a realistic task as I presently have a payroll program (ADP)that uses various areas of windows and if I uninsall windows ADP will charge a large fee to reinstall their portion of the program. I can connect to each ISP withno problem its just getting out to the web and sites.

Did not say what browser you are using,so let’s say IE,Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel,double-click the Add/Remove Programs Icon, select IE,click the remove button,if you get list select the repair button and follow on screen instructions.
Try this lately MSN and AOL have been a problem and no solution has been offered.
      Also uninstall AOL before proceedeing
2nd option will be to backup the ADP applications and proceede with reinstall suggestions.

Windows 95 had three versions of DUN(Dial up Networking). The older versions would not let you change DNS settings for your dial up so you couldn’t search the net when dialed up. If memory server me right go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows95 and thendownloads and find the latest version of DUN. Then when you right click on your DUN icon you can change the DNS settings for each dial up access. I hope this solves your problem.

When you connect to the internet (assuming you are connecting via modem or lan).. what message comes up.. I’m assuming the browser starts?.. Try connecting to a website using the IP address (216.32.74.52 for yahoo).. or you can type: ping http://www.yahoo.com (in a dos window) and see what you get.. if it fails, ping just the IP.. if it works that tells you that your DNS server is down or not working correct.. You’d need to either call your ISP or change your DNS server to another public DNS.. (I think Microsoft has a bunch of DNS servers that can be used publicly). Hope this helps.
