cannot add or see printers they DO work

By Rick H ·
I had this problem about a year ago but can't remember how I fixed it. I
think I had to do a repair install of my OS.

I have an xp pro machine, 3.0 mghz, 1g ram, pent 4, on a
10/100 tcp/ip Lan. I
print and plot to an hp laserjet 4 plus and
an hp designjet 1050c plotter.
Both are working fine. The
hitch is that I wanted to check the properties for
the laserjet
the other day and when I selected the "start/settings/printers
and faxes" they DO NOT SHOW. Also I am UNABLE TO ADD A PRINTER.
I have checked and the script services are started which I
thought they would be as
I can print just Fine but I need to fix
this. I appreciate any help I can get
on this, I have searched
the newsgroups and only find fixes for NT (which I
tried to no avail). I will watch for responses here but you could also
e-mail
me at : rhots995@netzero.com.
Thank you,
Rick
PS I tried sfc AND system restore and as I said they do work so the spooler is started

I saw this in 2k and it was a problem with cfgmgr32.dll couldnt hurt trying to replace it with a known good copy.
What happens when trying to install a printer? Does the add printer wizard even start? If not can you start the wizard by going to Start--Run and typing in:
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /il /c \\pcname
Can you successfully start and stop the spooler from cmd prompt? (net stop spooler and net start spooler).

A few thoughts, have you tried a repair on your XP? Boot from the CD and do a repair, what SP are you on? Have you ran any antispyware and are you virus def's upto date? Have you tried any restore points? You have backup your system right? If all else fails reinstall, it may sound extream but Microsoft recomends it.
Another thought, run cleanup, defrag and then do a scan disk. This will do wonders on strange problems.
