Cannot boot into NT4.0

By gmloukie ·
A Compaq Proliant2500 with a smart array and 4HDisk and RAID5. It boots to a black screen with the cursor blinking top left. The disks are checked and are working fine. The logical volume has one EISA partition 36M and the rest NTFS. From a boot diskette I can boot into NT. I tried to copy the bootsector using diskedit but it gave me the same result. Tried also to restore, It restored a number of files but the result was the same. I do not know if I can do anything with the MBR or if it is onlya matter of the disks.

Cannot boot into NT4.0

by Dannyboyisalsomelancolic In reply to Cannot boot into NT4.0

Hej:
This is going to sound very strange, but please read it all!

I have (more than once) been in the same situation as you are, having an nt, that can boot from a floppy, but not from the HD.

Two main reasons:

Nt does not like a system partition larger than 4 GB. In some cases you are able to create larger partitions using several utilities, and even able to install NT on such a partition, finding out later, that you can't boot. So be sure that yuor system partition is not larger than 4 GB.

The other reason could be your network card...!!???

I know, I know is sounds crazy, but specially in old systems, I had cases where a faulty network results in NT not booting!!!
I don't know why, but these are facts from the real life!!! So you better remove the network card, and if you can't al least disabled it in the BIOS.

last thing:

If you have more than one scsi-controllers, your need to define, which one your want to boot from. You need to disable BIOS on scsi-cont., which are not connected to boot devices.

Actually, you can have a system patition up to 8gb.... but you have to use another system to prepare (NTFS) the hard drive.

Specifically what is your HD config...?
2 9.1gb on scsi controller, 6 18gb drives on raid controller.... etc..?

Oh... if you can boot to a floppy... can you get to the root of the system partition ... c ?

Compare the boot.ini from the floppy to the one on the hard drive
