Cannot Boot PC - RPC Interrupted

By Dana Grantham ·
I have a friend that has a PC with Windows XP Home Edition. It has been working fine until recently. When he tries to boot the computer he receives an error message stating RPC was interrupted and is shutting down. Then the computer reboots and he gets the same error message. This continues over and over and he never has been able to boot his computer. All he uses the computer for is Internet through a cable modem. Is there a way to fix this problem? If so, please give solution in detail as I will have to send it to him.

Thank you in advance for any help.

You may have to go in to safe mode to run the Fix Blast tool. Then run the patch...

I hope this helps..

What you need to do is to download the virus removal tool and the patch (hard to do when the machine shuts down I know). After you have the two files downloaded, disconnect the wire to your internet connection and reboot the machine into safe mode. In safe mode, shut off System Restore and then run the removal tool. After the virus has been removed, reboot the machine into real mode, DO NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. Install the Microsoft security patch, then reboot and reconnect the machine to the internet. Once you get back online, you need to complete the Windows updates, by running the Windows Update link under the tools menu in IE. Also update and run a antivirus program. If you have further questions, please call me.

Once you have fixed the system up, it would be advisable to gra a copy of a good personal firewall an install it. I personally have used compromised machines with sterling results. It not only stopped the worm dead on its tracks but held up and stopped secondary port scans from previously affected machines on the internet. On last count there have been over 70 unique attempted scans on this computer in the last 2 days, definitely not a pretty picture.
Good luck and hope the advice is of help.

Sorry I forgot to mention which firewall I used. I used Zone Alarm Personal Firewall with very sterling results. Its easy enough to teach end users how to congigure and manage and provides very strong protection against intrusion and malicious backdoor programs already on the system.
