By ehughbanks ·
I am running win98, internet explorer5.01sp1,
sometime in the last week I now cannot connect to websites that say I am entering a secure connection,I tried changing my ie security settings to low but this did no good, I had the settings very restrictive, I have 2 other pcs on my home network and they can access the sites fine, any ideas where I should start to troubleshoot or what is wrong? I am sure it is something stupid I did but I need help....
thanks

Try these solutions from Microsofts KB

Method 1
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Internet.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under Security, click one of the following check boxes to select it:

PCT 1.0
SSL 2.0
SSL 3.0

Click OK

Method 2
In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.

On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.

Under Proxy Server, click Advanced.

Type the appropriate proxy server address and port in the Secure box, click OK, click OK, and then click OK again.

thanks for the well written answer, but it did not help. PCT 1.0, SSL 2.0, and SSL 3.0 were already checked, I am not using a proxy server, any other ideas?

Also under Method 1 above make sure the "TLS 1.0" option is not choosen. Alot of websites do not support that protocol.

One more thing to try:

To resolve this problem, use Registry Editor to remove the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\Schannel
NOTE: This registry key is rebuilt when you start Internet Explorer.

Make sure internet options/connection tab/lan settings/automatically detect settings is unchecked. You can also try the setup button on the connection tab and going through the setup wizard.

To delete the registry key listed above follow these steps. All steps are performed in the left pane of the Registry Editor.

From the Run Command type regedit to open the Registry Editor

Click the + sign by HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click the + signby System folder
Click the + sign by CurrentControlSet folder
Click the + sign by Control folder
Click the + sign by SecurityProviders folder
Right click on the Schannel folder and choose to delete
Close regedit and reboot the system.

A fresh KEY will be recreated when you start IE.
