i installed win2k professional with an unattended steup-cd and tried a liveupdate without success. im am very angry since everything is unclear. some updates are listed and it says(in german) that there is an exclusive one(which one?) the one is only said when i enter. and the informations in the popup-window is nonexclusive. completely confusing. all is total confusiom how do i know which service pack i already have? no numbers or whatsoever in the listing to compare. my pc only shows numbers.the english help-link does not work!
why should we delete some of the updates, delete from where? from the listing and why?
i think i will install winme and later use linux. i want this service pack because i hope the following problems would be solved.my last startups always show symtray.exe. sometime error-message, pls restart.
i use norton-system-works. works very well with winme.

are these error messaged standard? nsworks did its work, no errors found, or, errors corrected. i will restart nsworks.

why on the earth does microsoft all the times built up hurdles? is it money or what else? if there is more freedom of doing on this earth we would have less pain!and pc-troubles! we could care about eachother.

Hi,

Yes i would also like more freedom of doing :-)
If you still feel like giving W2k a chance before moving on to Linux then you should start with download and install servicepack 3.
It is likely to fix both the updater and give you the updates in at the same time.
SP3 is found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/sp3lang.asp
(remove any spaces in/after link)
Just choose language and download the network install file or ask a friend to download if youare short of bandwidth.
Hope this helps, if not there is a neat disributions page at:
http://www.linux.org/dist/index.html

i could finally download sp3 with guessing.
1. disable firewall(why is there no warning at all?)
2. i deleted all other(8 from 9)packages from the window.the chose
sp3. now i will download the others. oh, i will have to activate norton firewall meanwhile. i had some attacks but no virus at all since july on my other 2 internet- pcs plus some security drives on the same pcs. pentium 1s. did i make something right? deleting outlook, using webwasher, spyblocker, adaware, regclean, regcleaner. should i use more effective tools? to avoid spam is a big wish, tuesday is my birthday. sorry i had to rate your answer unacceptable otherwise this could no have been written. what a stupid system here. sometime i can write somwtimes not, depending which door i use. pls simplify this system here.
one last question: all the times i get teh message symtray.exe after boot-up. pls execute program, which one? i only push ok.
have can i avoid this message. norton system works did its job.

Hi again,

Symtray.exe is the Symantec Tray that holds links to all the apps in Norton Systemworks.
I dont know why you get the message to start application but i guess its because the program is inactivated in some way.
The tray is not needed for Systemworks to function.
The message may come as a result of Symtray being blocked from autostart at bootup.

Here is some possible ways to get rid of the message:
Check the configuration:
Click on Start ->run and type msconfig. Go to the "Startup" tab and see if symtray.exe is listed but unchecked among the listed items.
If Symtray is in the list but unchecked then a mark in the square to the left , a click on "Apply", and a reboot should do the trick.
If not listed: This program or suite has probably been moved, removed of damaged. Try to reinstall Norton Systemworks after saving any custom settings as these may disappear.
If listed and checked:
You can try and disable the Symtray in msconfig but also check the Autostart group in startmenu so that it doesnt start from there.
or
Reinstall/ Uninstall Systemworks.

Hope this helps.
