Cannot Drag and Drop

By finnie ·
Aaarrggghhh!
A customer brought in a computer to me (Windows 95 with Internet Explorer) and said he couldn't drag and drop. Sure enough, I can highlight Items on the desktop and in Windows Explorer but I cannot even drag them. A reinstall of Windows 95 didn't help either. For reasons to complicated (and irrelevant to the situation at hand)to briefly explain, performing a backup of all the data and doing a reinstall would be a nightmare. A wake-up crying for your mommy nightmare. Any solutions GREATFULLY accepted.

Cannot Drag and Drop

1. Hardware problem? Does the mouse work properly on another machine.

2. Update mouse driver to latest version. If it is the latest version, grab a new one from the manufacturer's site anyway. The existing one may be corrupt.

3. Virus? I recently had the Sub Seven trojan which cause my PC to wreak havoc with my ps/2 mouse. (And McAfee didn't detect the virus! For signs of Sub Seven, look in win.ini and system.ini for signs of msrexe.exe in shell and load lines).

Mouse works O.K. on other machines. Grabbed new video and mouse drivers already. No Virus. Thanks for the help

1) Can you drag and drop in safe mode? If you are able to I would update the video driver.

2) Windows desktop update may be installed. If IE4 is installed I would uninstall the desktop update through add/remove programs, double clicking on IE, and choosing the option to uninstall the desktop update. If the customer has IE5, then IE5 would need to be uninstalled back to IE4 and then uninstall the desktop update.

Yes, I could drag and drop in safe mode but I already updated all the drivers. Tried the IE stuff too. Thanks for the help.

What version of win 95 does your customer have. If I can remember correctly drag and drop didn't work to good. Try and cut and paste but if that doesn't work then try reseting the settings on the explorer, that could be the problem. Try it out. But I'm thinking that it is probly a step that some one might have over looked when they org. set it up.

It's Windows 95 B. Reset my explorer options to no avail. Funny thing is the mouse used to work. Bizarre, huh? Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree with the above answers. It sounds like a mouse issue. I can't remember if anybody suggested this or not, but try changing the type of mouse. If you are using a PS2 mouse, try a serial mouse.

Good luck,

Tried changing the mouse. I had to admit defeat and backup all the files (Mommy!Mommy!) and format. Complete reinstall would not work. Thanks for the suggestion.

My first thought was the power supply. So, I liked Answer #3, but I think I would take a look at the motherboard specs first. Could it be too much power for that board? Maybe you only need 250watts. I have heard of stranger things. Or maybe thepower supply is bad. I would look to replace the cheap items first.

My next thought was the video card. I have seen simular cases where it was a bad video card (Compaq machines are infamous for this)

Good luck,
Bill Blunden
