Cannot fdisk

By K-T ·
I found an 8gb hard drive with NT on it that I wanted to fdisk and format.I used fdisk to view the partition details - 2gb primary (fat16) and 6gb extended (unformatted). The extended partition had no logical drives defined. Yet when I went to delete it, I was unable to, and received a message stating that I could not delete an extended partition while it contained logical drives. Any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated. I don't think the type of operating system on the hard disk is relevant, I know somebody who encountered the same problem with a W98 disk.

Hi,
Just a thought... have you tried doing an 'fdisk /mbr' to get rid of the Master Boot Record? I think that's the right command, but if you are going to scrub the drive anyway, it's not going to hurt!

You could also do a Low Level Format, which should restore the drive to it's original (blank) state - try a search on google, I can't remember the name of the util for this.

Good luck!

Donald

1)when the machine boots with floppy at the command prompt type FDISK /MBR
On fdisk screen you want to choose to delete the primary partition, hit escape and then fdisk the the extended partition with logical drives which I think is option 3.

The extended partition may be using the NTFS file system used for WINNT security. Try using the "delpart.exe" utility which may be found on the internet if you look around. If you cannot find it, just email me and I will send it to you. Low-level formatting should be done only as a last resort.

If you wanted to repartition the drive and delete the information on it, you can do a debug on the machine. It will remove ALL partitions, to a deeper extent than fdisk. It's the closest thing youc an get to a low level format. If you need the script, send an email to me at tobygri@clientlogic.com. I will email you back asap witht he script. Good luck!

I had the similar problem you were having. I could not get rid of the partition. I obtained a small program called partition magic. partition magic was easy to use and worked beautifully.
