Cannot log off NT Server 4.0 properly

By yliou ·
I got an error message said "This Windows Application cannot respond to End Task request" when I tried to log off my NT 4.0 SP6a server running Exchange Server 5.5 SP4. The title of application is just a "W".

It happens all the times except right after I reboot the server. Also, when it happens, I cannot run a 16 bit Setup program, which I must in order to update the virus list. All the files required by WOWEXEC are in the SYSTEM32 directory. It becomes very difficult to reboot the server everytime I need to update the virus list.

I think you are infected with viruses. I faced the same problem. The virus that infected my system is code red. Try scan through your system and clean it up.

Cheers!

Thanks for your help.

I just scanned the entire NT server by using InoculateIT 4.53 with the latest virus list. I did not find any virus on my server. My server and network are funtioning at normal speed.

Two suggestions...
1. Get it scanned & cleaned of all viruses. If code red is there, is you network very slow ? Check. I used McAfee to remove CodeRed. Also use Lockdown.exe for Microsoft IIS 4.0.
2. The application is a non-microsoft 16-bit application. Try to search for .exe by date & then remove it. Probable came into your Server thru xxx / porny web sites.

The 16-bit application I used is the virus update file that I downloaded from Computer Associate web site. The virus update file has been shared by thousands of users everytime CA put out a new virus list.

It may be the InoculateIT program itself that is causing the error message - whateve it is, the normal NT shutdown process is having trouble getting the program to shut down when you log off. Antivirus programs like InoculateIT always run in the background to check files as they are opened, so it would be running all the time, making it a likely candidate. I would try uninstalling and reinstalling InoculateIT and see if that fixes it. If it's not InoculateIT, there is some other 16-bit utility that you have running on your system that is not behaving well with the NTVDM. Hope this helps!
