Cannot reset Home page in Windows XP

By ralph.brown1 ·
We are unable to reset the home page (OS WINXP)
When we try to reset in internet properties it always returns to a giberish site and our intended home web site does not appear.
We have IE 6 and have scanned with norton, win Defender, Spybot etc with nothing found. We are using Zonealarm.
Can anyone help please?

It sounds like a malware/rootkit problem. Run all those tests (virus/spyware etc) in safemode. Make sure that all the definitions are up to date first. Also check out http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6239-0.html?forumID=49&threadID=195777 I posted some links to rootkit revealers.

Did you turn off the system restore before you ran the antivirus/ spyware removers? The restore point will let the bad software reinstall it self. Did you delete all cookies, temp. files and clear out the history. Do a search on browser hijackers, cw was a big one a while back.
If nothing else works back up and reload, you can try a repair to see if will fix the problem.
With Rootkits it is sometime easyer to reinstall then to try to repair.

Running scans in Safe Mode, and turning off System Restore, are important enough to repeat.

I keep Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Adaware SE Personal both installed at all times, and scan frequently, in addition to a commercial AV/firewall/anti-spyware suite. Not a knock on either company, but with corporate participation and the difficulty telling "legit" corporate downloads from spyware, no single program seems to be able to keep up with it all.

Spybot and Adaware have both, on different occasions, found a threat immediately after the other scanned and reported no threats.

Also, for unusually nasty infestations, Hijack This is highly recommended.

Besides the previous advice, sometimes you are better off time-wise to just save needed info and reformat/reinstall the OS.

I am not too sure if this will help but you could try this as well... Click the Start button.

Click Run.
The Run window appears.

Type C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc and Click OK.

Right-click Hosts file and Select Delete from the pull-down.

Left-click Yes to confirm deletion of the Hosts file

Wonder if Windows defender (or any other antispyware prog) has the browser hijacking settings set to restore the homepage to the "giberish site"
