Cannot resolve by name through VPN tunnel

By gfnuccio ·

Please, assist on this if you can:

I have a customer who claims that he cannot map a drive by name on his server sitting at one end (London) of an IPSec VPN tunnel when accessing it from the other end(Leeds).
However, if he tries to do it using the IP address, this works.
London server is and the Leeds network is on London has a Speedtouch 610 and a PIX behind it. Leeds is connected via a Cisco 878, and it's a LAN-to-LAN.
I have checked everything and all access lists and traffic are fine. No restrictions whatsoever.
I believe he's not checked his Microsoft network configuration properly.
Anything that you think should be double-checked on the Microsoft config?
I'm thinking of the Domain controller but am not as knowledgeable as I hoped...

Many Thanks

where is the dns server that resolves the ip of the device he is trying to hit, can he access it. try putting in a static dns entry in the hosts file to see if that works, if it does then there is a dns issue. if not there is a possible problem with trusts in the Active Directory domain, if they are in different domains.

I have sent the customer an email about the procedure you suggested and will post the outcomes when they come...
