Cannot run Windows Update or MBSA 2.0

By kdyck ·
I cannot seem to figure out why the Windows Update site will not work for one of my servers (Win2k3 SP1). When I access the site I get the following message:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem"

I then tried to run MBSA against the machine to see just how out of date it was and got this error:
"An error occurred while scanning for security updates. (0xc80003f3)"

I have searched on the errors above but have not had any success. Has anybody else run into this?
(I did try windows update from another machine and it does work ok)

Sounds like a security issue.

Make sure that you are logged on as the Admin or with Admin Privileges. If that doesn't work there is a GP or something in your AD that is preventing this process from running.

It sounds as if this sever is locked down fairly tightly and that is where the main problem is what you need to do is work with the person who set it up to fix your current problem if they are available. You should also check for any added scripts in AD or GP that could be preventing this from working. Depending what this server is being used for it may not be necessary to have it fully patched and it could have been deliberately set that way to prevent any Patches breaking something that is Mission Critical.

If this is an internal device that doesn't work with anything external it's not important to keep them updated while it's nice it's not overly important. But if it's a Exchange, Web Server you have to patch it no matter what it may break as it's vulnerable to attack because of the job that it is doing.
