Cannot save Excel files on NT Server

By lloyd ·
How can we solve the problem of saving Execl files on NT. We can open a file and save it on local drive but not on the network drive.
NT workstation is on the local machine. We have seen an error in the Event Log "The redirector has timed out a request to "SERVER NAME"". Could this have anything to do with it?

Make sure that you have mapped the network drive and also the permissions on that drive and relevant directories

This indicates a general network communications error. It is not indicative of a security issue.

The problem could be on the workstation or on the server.

Check NIC drivers, cables, switch ports, etc.

You could try disabling Redirector Caching on the Server - See Technet Q163401

But this si probably the symptom reather than the cause. The article refers to these errors being generated when a "network error" occurs. Hence I would think that your network connectivity to this server would be a good place to start looking.

You don't specify exactly what version of Excel you are running. This is a known problem with certain versions of Excel. We had the problem, exactly as stated. It is not a network problem. It is not an NT problem. It is not a workstation problem.

It is a problem with Excel. The updating of a certain DLL resolves it. Apply the latest service patch for your version of Excel or upgrade to one of the newer office version should resolve it.

We were able to pinpoint the problem because we had different versions of excel and depending on the version, the person would or would not have the network saving issue.

Its been a fairly long while since I have seen or heard of this problem so I can't remember any more specifics.
