Hi, do you have the same workgroup on your windows 98 and xp systems?

Also home edition is not geared for home networking.

I think it is about time we set up a tech tip page on this one as it turns up about twice a month.

Win XP will NOT let just anyone talk to it, every user coming over the network has to have a User account on the Win XP machine, it has to have thesame User ID and password that the other PC has for that user.

You also have to have them set on the same Workgroup, when you set up the workgroup name in both machines, and the machine names, make sure that you have the caps lock on as some installations will see and entry of 'MyHome' as 'MyHome' and others will see it as 'MYHOME' and both will display 'MYHOME' but see them as not the same.

Also ensure that both machines ahve file sharing activated with a folder shared that has the other PC User ID with access permissions.

I had the same problem on my home network with the Home XP machine. My network consisted of two 98 machines and the one Home XP. Heres what I did to be able to see all machines on all machines:

1. All machines have to have the same workgroup.2. All machines have to have sharing enabled.
3. On the XP Machine do the following:

Go to Network Connections
Choose Properties
Choose TCP/IP
Choose Properties
Choose the Gerneral Tab
Choose Advanced
Choose WINS
Select "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

The XP machine icon should now appear on the 98 machines.

One more idea in addition to all the above, make sure the MS personal firewall is disabled on your machine. This has given me problems in the past.

Right click My Network Places, click advanced, disable firewall.

Make sure you have an alternative way to protect your gateway/network.
