cannot see network printers

By itask1 ·
win 98 clients cannot see printers on NT server: - Some printers are configured and share out on the server running NT 4.0. Clients on Wins 2k has no problem seeing these printers when they tried to add a printer. However, clients on Wins 98/ME cannot see these printers while trying to add one (when they click on the server, it does not expand to show the available printers). But if a path is specified in the latter, there is no problem connecting to the printer. Is there any setting missing onthe Server where the printers are shared causing the above problem ? Appreciate some guide, thanks.

One thing to check is the size of the share name. Anything over 8 characters long will not be recognized by Win 9x machines. Also make sure when installing the drivers to the print server, that you install the drivers for Win 9x also -- this will be an option on the sharing tab of the printer properties pages. Hope this helps.....

My bad - its 12 Characters, not 8. Here is a MS Knowlege base article on the subject.

You have a browsing problem. This has nothing to do with "8 character names" or "Windows 95 Drivers installed on the Server."

Make sure that:

1. On the Windows 95/98 box your "workgroup" is set to the (NT) domain you are operating in.

2. On any Windows 95/98 box that is sharing resources, Browse Master is turned off (from Network Properties, Microsoft File and Print Sharing properties.

3. Either your lmhosts (not hosts) file on your PC or your WINS services on your server are configured properly.

This should get you started.

The Windows 95 and 98 and ME are able to read maximun 11 characters of share name. If your share name is exceeding more than 11 characters you can't see the shared printers as well as any shared directories.

Please check your share names. If you bring down your share names to with in 11 characters you can see the printers.
