Can't access website without PING first

By kwg ·
We've got a problem tracking application running on a server in Amsterdam. We conntect to it through a VPN/WAN connection.

The problem is we can't connect to it from this end without PINGing it first. I did ipconfig /displaydns before and after the ping, and found that this server is NOT in the DNS cache before the ping, but IS after the ping.

Can anyone tell me why this happens and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

Couple of questions for ya.

Where are your DNS servers exactly? Local or remote.

It could be that when you attempt to connect to the server first, it times out before the connection is established. If you ping first, it establishes the connection and then you can connect. Have you looked at the time it takes to get the tunnel up and running? Is the tunnel suppose to go down? Is it suppose to stay up all the time? If so, then you should maybe set a keepalive setting on your VPN to make sure it stays up.

Try that and get back to us.
