Can't access Win2k computer from WinXP

By afarmer ·
I am not able to view files on a Windows 2000 Pro computer on my home network. The computer I am trying to access from is running Windows XP Pro. The Windows 2k computer is shown as an icon on the network, but when I double-click on it I get a message that the computer is not accessable, network path was not found. Any suggestions?

Do you have a resource shared on the system?

Do you have a local account and password to the share?

Follow the advice here to set that up:

I would suspect a network address. If computer 1 is address 192.168.1.100 and the 2nd computer is 192.168.1.102, then try a PING.
on computer 1: PING 192.168.1.102

Also check that the subnet address is the same. The most commonly used subnet is 255.255.255.0 (for an internal network).
