Question

Locked

Cant acesss my USB Flash Drive.

By JUDGE DREDD04 ·
I am trying to access my USB Flash Drive. It was encripted using Bitlocker.

I am running windows 64 Bit Ultimate.

When i insert the drive it says it needs to be fornatted. The drive capacity is full though so i am assuming the files are there.

This was after i had to reinstall Windows. I have a copy of the Certificate in the Personal Information Format but this is no help.

Any ideas?

Thank You :)

Unencrypt the flash drive with BitLocker

Assuming you have the encryption key, that is. If not...

You need to decrypt it using the right key.

I don't think WinXP will work due to the flash drive using bitlocker (Vista and above).

Two issues here, first is the partition information is munged and needs repair. After this is done you should be able to decrypt using bitlocker key. WinXP might fix the partition info during chkdisk but it won't allow access to bitlocker encrypted media. Try on a box running same OS as the one you encrypted on.

need to format drive

There has been an update by Microsoft that does "corrupt" a flash drive if you dont remove it properly. I have lost a couple of USB thumb drives this way, and it is a pain. but if you can access it on another computer there is the issue of Bitlocker on lesser platforms, just copy off the info and allow it to reset the drive with a format on the oldest machine you have to use. that way there is backwards compatibility, If it will not access on any machine then the drive had something corrupt it.

Always dismount (eject) removable media

before physically yanking it out of computer. This isn't anything new, no active filesystem copes well with hard errors brought about by loss of power. NTFS is pretty good wrt atomicity in transactions but most USB flash media is FAT32 and more susceptible to corruption.

I have a copy of the Certificate in the Personal Information Format but this is no help.

Bitllocker in the Control Panel says its off for my drive but i still cant access it. I have the Personal Information Exchange (.pfx) for the drive but i have no idea how to use this to help me get to the files on the drive.
