Can't add domain user to local group

By NatCat ·
I've added a new laptop to my network. I've joined the machine to the domain, logged on as differnet users and can surf the network.

The problem is that I'm trying to add a domain user to the power users group of the laptop. I can see all the domain members and groups, but when I attempt to add any of them I'm getting an error message "The domain does not exist or cannot be contacted. "

Has anyone else had this problem ?

Have you added the computer in Active Directory? I had this problem, and the fix was to 1) add the machine to active directory, 2) make the changes while logged on as the local administrator, who was temporarily added to the domain admins group, and3) make sure the machine is connected to the domain when the domain user tries to logon. If I can be of further help, please Email me.

When you joined the domain, did you create a computer account? If there is no computer account in AD for the laptop, then unjoin the domain, rejoin and when it asks you if you want to create a computer account, do so. If there is already a computer account in AD, then unjoin the domain, delete the AD computer account manually, then rejoin the domain and again say Yes to create a computer account. Also, be sure you are logged onto the laptop with an account that has domain admin rights as well as local admin rights - I usually take an account that has domain admin rights and add it to the local admins group. Hope this helps!

My problem was caused by the DNS server settings in the DHCP were set to 2 external servers. Reseting the DNS server setting to the internal DNS server took care of the problem
