Can’t add local printers as local Admini

    Locked

    by dwayne.sealy ·

I’m running WinNT4/SP4 on a system configured for a workgroup. My problem comes when attempting to install the printer drivers for a locally attached printer, the “My Computer” option is grayed out. It appears as though the Administrator account doesn’t have permissions to add local printers.

    Any ideas?

Are you sure your computer is on a peer-to-peer network? I have encounter this situation at times in a client/server domain network. The way I remedy this situation:

      1) go to the server and make the user both “administrator” and “domain administrator”

      2) log back in as that user. You will find that you are now able to install the local printer. Make sure you go back to take the admin rights away from the user.

Are you certain you are on the LOCAL administrator account? If you didn’t install the machine, some guys rename the Administrator accont to something else, then add a dummy Administrator account to fool potential hackers.

Do you have a mandatoryprofile loaded for the Administrator?

By the way, normal local users are not allowed to install printers. They have to be in the Administrators group on the local machine.

Hope this points you in the right direction!
