Can't boot up

By jstef9 ·
When I turn on laptop w/ win98, I just get green screen with illegal operation box saying " explorer caused invalid page fault in module explorer.exe at 01671:0040lf31 "
Can't boot up in safe mode or from disk. Is everything lost ? It happened right after downloading software.

Reinstall windows over the top of itself. To do this boot from a bootdisk with cd support (or boot from the cd but do not do an install from the startup screen). Once booted up, go the the cd drive and change to the windows (or win9 directory and run setup from there. This installation should retain all of your previous settings.

It sounds like you downloaded some bad software or a virus app.

Cheers.

Boot from a Win98 recovery disk (floppy). First try typing "fdisk /mbr" See if that works. If not, reboot on the floppy and type "sys c:" Then try again. If there is still no booting in windoze, boot again on the floppy, select the boot enabling CD's and then reinstall Windoze over itself. Good Luck.

BTW, if you don't have a Win98 recovery disk, you can make one from any computer with win98 by going to control panel/add-remove programs/startup disk.

Had to format and reinstall, wouldn't install over itself. A freeware I downloaded attached something and had a grip on it. Thanks for your suggestion , Joe
