can't boot win98 after reinstall

By monkeyluna ·
I can't boot Win98 after installing it to a linux loaded laptop.

The laptap is Compaq LTE5000, an old machine bought 6-7 years ago, with 75Mhz cpu and 771M hard disk. Its hard disk and floppy disk shares one port.

The original OS is win95, last year my firend help me reformat it and
installed Linux. Recently I reformated it again, and installed Windows 98. I formated it with command a:format c:/s, copied all win98 system files to hard disk, but it still booted with Linux, not Win 98.
Any suggestions are greatly appreaciated!

Unless the linux was installed with the dual boot option then it's quite possible there is no free disk area to create a FAT partition. If you wish to completely remove the linux that's easy on another 98 machine create a startup disk, then copy fdisk format and sys commands to the startup disk, boot from the floppy and run fdisk on the hard drive remove the non-dos partition reboot and run fdisk again to create your FAT partition if the disk is larger than 512MB answer yes to the large disk support question to create FAT32 partition. Follow the menus to create the partition. Put your CD-rom module in and boot from the 98 CD If you can't boot from the CD Use the floppy to format the HDD and use the /s option. Once the HDD is bootable create a config.sys and autoexec.bat files to load CD-ROM support reboot and run the 98 setup

Down load delpart from Microsoft and run it. It will compleatly remove all partitions and software. Use a win95 boot disk and partition it with the no for large disk format. format it with the format c: /s /u and then boot to a win98 floppy and except the boot with cdrom support. With the 95 cd loaded and type setup.

Get a boot disk with fdisk.exe program on it.
then delete all the partitions with fdisk, then build a new partition. Restart the pc, run format c: /s, reboot the pc. It should boot normal, then install windows 95 or 98.
It will work,

e-mail me back if you find any problems.

Unplug the computer, take out the battery, walk around the computer three times, put the battery back in, plug it back in and reboot. I have had this problem several times with Compaq laptops everytime I need tp reboot to change a setting.

Hope this helps!
