Can't Browse after DUN connection

By trevorwhite ·
Windows98SE/Inspiron5000/Win Modem/IE5.01(Later SP1)

Cannot browse web pages while PC (Dell Inspiron 5000) is undocked. In this mode I use the internal modem which connects through DUN (Dialing when no network connection is available).

The connection is made and I can ping the ISP and any web page. DNS resolution is OK too as I can ping using numeric or name type addresses. When I try to browse there is no further traffic after the initial DNS resolving (IP address is displayed in the bottom status line). IE eventually times out with 'Can not display this page'.

I have checked the DUN and TCP/IP settings with my ISP and they are stumped. I have searched the MSKB and as a result replaced the Wsock32.dll with the original win98 version (still no joy). I have updated to latest IE5.01SP1, still no joy. To uninstall completely my IE5 (I understand) is a major exercise so would like to resolve some other way.

Also checked system files, registery, etc as described in System Information tools.

Can't Browse after DUN connection

Well, I assume that your DUN is to the ISP and not to your network.
Well, if your network uses Proxy for the network, your browser will need to reflect that ( configuration under, Tool, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings.
If I am right about the Proxy, try setting that option to Automatically detect settings.

Good luck!

All ready tried that, but thanks anyway. Solution was to disable the proxy client when working undocked and enabled when docked.

If you're saying you can ping, tracert, get name resoltion, the problem isn't with DUN, it's with IE. I'd bet if you load a 32 bit version of netscape that'll work fine.

I'd look at the following.

1. Look to see if the content advisor is enabled

2. Make sure the The security settings aren't jacked sky high

3. Make sure that there isn't a proxy enabled. We can thank those Free CDs from companies like Prodigy for this one

4. Look for any extra winsock.dlls. Even though yousaid you looked for wsock32, it will still use that file.

Good Luck to you

Oh puh-leez. Netscape...Ha haa. Proxy? Well, if you can ping names then there is more than likely no proxy, especially at as ISP!

What I would do is COMPLETELY delete all network protocols and IE and reboot 5o times and then reinstall. You may even try a different PC and isolate the problem to your PC having the problem only,

When using DUN, you must disable your Proxy Client. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel. Double-click the Proxy Client applet and uncheck both boxes. Close Proxy Client. Start your DUN connection.

Now when you get back to the office, don't forget to check the boxes and click Update now in Proxy Client. Then start your browser.

Enjoy!

Bingo - Well done. I should have worked that out myself. Thanks a million. IE5 has a 'Dial if no network connection is available' feature which seams to work OK. Only thing I have to do is to manage the Proxy Client . . Yippee.

Continuation of Proposed Answer 4.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in DUN, change your Internet Option/Connection to "Connect using my modem."

And when you're back to the office change it to "Connect using LAN" or something like that.

Enjoy!
