cant burn cd's

By lhsdude ·
I have a Creative 8x4x32 speed cdrw. I cannot ever burn cd's with it. It will get through the burn test just fine but when it starts burning it will burn about halfway and then say burn process failed. I do not do it on the fly and my source drive is 52x max. Heres the specs on my computer, 1.1 athlon, 128 megs pc133, 10 gig seagate hard drive, voodoo5 5500 agp.

Most burning software (I don't have the Nero software but I'm assuming it's the same) have options for burn speen. You are probably running into buffer underruns (the burner is burning faster than the pc is giving it data) or buffer overruns (the pcis giving it data faster than it can burn). Depending on what's happening, adjust the speed accordingly (up for underruns and down for overruns).

1) make sure you have the most recent updates to nero 5... 5.5.9 i believe is most current ( http://www.nero.com/en/index.html#download )
2) Disable any running programs in your taskbar (Anti-virus software specifically)
3) Do not be running other programs on your desktop while buring a cd.

Test under the above circumstances and if that does not work, then try buring to the hdd first (or creating an image on the hdd before burning).

Look at the cdr media and make sure that this is notthe problem (some cheaper media tends to fail in many drives).

Look at the cd drive and make sure the lens are clean.

Make sure that there are no IRQ's sharing the same IRQ as your cd-rom drive. etc.

If the device has never worked as cdr (but you can use the drive for reading just fine), I would suspect an IRQ conflict that may show up when the drive is used more intensly or a software setting within Nero. Look over the manual as well.

Even at 4X burning speeds, you can have buffer underrun problems if the Source drive and recording drive are on the same IDE channel.
The best work-around for this is to install a PCI IDE controller card and move your hard drives over to the controller card. Then, have the CD-ROM drive and CD-RW drive on seperate IDE cables.

2 other possible problems.

Some PC133 based Socket A mother boards underclock the AMD CPUs. Make sure that the FSB is set to 100MHz, and the multiplier is set to 11X.

On my 4X drive on W98, I need to shut down ALL background programs in order to get good burns.
Start by closing all of the applications in the system tray.
Then, use Alt-Ctrl-Del to show other running applications. The only one you really need is Explorer and the CD software.

Oh, another 64MB - 256MB of ram would be a good idea to.

All good answers given. Here's a problem I've ran into while copying from CD to CD.

When the drives are stacked on top of each other the vibration from both CD's running at the same time can hose the burn process. Try copying the files to the hard drive first and see what happens. If this works check to make sure the CDROMs are securely installed. If only 2 or 3 screws are used to hold the drives put in the other screws. This is more of a problem with cases that have clips to hold in the drives.

Your out of luck. Your burner have been working to much and it's at its point were it doesn't burn all the way. Try lowing the speed and see what happenes. If it's the same it's the burner. Same burner die out after so much burning has been done. Good Luck!
