Can't connect to certain web sites

By brian ·
We are running a 5.1 Netware file server as well as a dedicated Border Manager server. We have two specific web sites that we cannot connect to. It appears as though the name is resolved however the connection times out. Also, when trying to 'Ping' it times out. If we do an 'nslookup' it comes back with an ip address. Trying to connect to the ip address gives the same problem. The BM server is set up with a public NIC and a private NIC. Currently we are using the BM server as a proxy server and DHCP but no DNS, however we were having the same problem when we were using NAT at the BM server with no proxy.
One of the sites we are having problems with is cdw.com.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I don't really have a good answer, but there are a couple of things I've found from a similar experience. Have you checked with your ISP? We were using Cable & Wireless at one point, and we couldn't connect to several web sites because their IP addressing conflicted with our. Some mail couldn't go through, and some websites couldn't either. I also had a problem getting to CDW.com at this company. It wasn't until I put in a new, faster, T-1 line that i could get a reliable connection. Their webpage is very graphics intensive, and unless you have a fast connection, it may not load. Also, for grins, you might try clearing out your cashe, or trying Netscape or Explorer, which everone you're not using. Good Luck.

The problem was that the sites we couldn't connect to started with the same octet as our own public IP. My boss had the wrong subnet mask setup on our firewall server (class A instead of Class C)so it thought that the sites were local.

Cleaning out the cache is a good first step. You can do this by using
"load proxy -cc". Also, maybe your ISP has incorrect DNS information. Try getting the IP addresses from a different network. Try using the IP address that your server reports on a different network. Is your internal ip address the same as the real address (or in the same range, if you subnet)? Also, check your rules to see if that particular IP address or web page is blocked. Check the etc\hosts file to see if there is an incorrect static IP for the website you are trying to reach.
Do a tracert from a workstation to determine where the problem is happening. Has the site blocked your IP address for any reason?
Sorry I can't be more help.
