What message is displayed when you telnet to port 143 of the Exchange server?

Are you aware that your username is of the form:

<domain>\<domainuser>\<mailboxname>

Kind regards,

If you got your telnet session going to the IMAP port, you can terminate the session by typing in

1 logout

As the second answer suggests, you may have a problem with the username in your email client settings.

If you dig a bit deeper into the settings, you may find that you can allow relaying selectively from your particular IP address or subnet. That's the way one maintains some security, at least in Exchange 5.5.

now i played with my inbox on my linux pc and now able to see my inbox but i keep getting errors unable to relay when sending outside email, do i have to enable relay on my exchange? Is that kinda risky to enable relay on the exchange server?
