Cant connect to Novell server in win98

By mitchsims ·
I had a workstation with windows 95. I was connecting fine to a Novell 4.11 network (novell client 32).

I installed windows 98 on this machine and now it cant login to the network.

I tried the upgrade procedure over 95 (renaming win.com and selecting the install to the windows directory.) Noe luck. I then reformatted the HD and did a clean install of win 98. Again no luck.

Any sugestions?

Thanks,
Mitch Sims

The only problem I've had with Novell clients and Win95->Win98 upgrades is that I did have a situation where the upgrade broke the NIC driver. Once I downloaded and installed a new NIC driver that was supported by Win98, the problem resolved.

Asfar as I know there are no Win95/Win98 issues with the client itself but you might want to make sure you have v3.21 in case there is something they've fixed that might impact your situation.

Once you start Windows, open up your network properties and confirm that you are running the correct ethernet frame type (the same as your server is running). If you are set to "Auto", check your Newtare box frame type and make sure the PC matches the server. If that fails, remove all networking components (protocols, clients, NIC drivers) and put hem back one at a time - something may be corrupt.

After starting up, right-click on your network icon and go to your network properties. Then select the network that you are using. But be careful, some network servers need more than one network program to work. So, you must also check to see if allthe network programs are installed properly too. Finally, if all are correct, then maybe double-click on the network that you are using. Maybe the properties there is making the problem that you have encountered.

After reformatting your hard disk and installing Windows 98 (including the drivers for your NIC), you did not mention that you installed Novell Client32. Making it as the Primary Network Logon. Please make certain of that and as mentioned above, check your frame type. It must be the same as your network (802.2 or 802.3).

Enjoy!

Check the NIC card with the Diag. software that comes with the nick. It just might be a coincidence that the NIC failed. The NIC card's Diags will allow you to test the card for functionality. Also make sure that Windows did not assign your NIC card's IRQ or memory address to some other device. If your card is as ISA go into your BIOS and set the IRQ for your NIC to Legacy. Also the ISA NIC card Diags will alow you to set the Address, IRQ,... Any other Qs email me at villafum@dia.denver.co.us
