Can't delete .exe file

By dotjock ·
I think I've read all similar discussions but am still stuck. I'm using XP PRO(sp2)on my home networked PC. Can?t delete a file ?Firegirls Public (partial name)?exe? on a second data-only drive. Have confirmed I have full admin privileges but am unable to delete under Safe Mode or msconfig Diagnostic Startup. Can see services running using ?Hack This? and services.msg but I have no clue about which one is using the file. Have even searched the registry for key words found in the file name but no luck. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

What anti-virus and adware and malware scanners are you running?

Have you tried shutting off the Service then removing the file? If you have...

Run Panda Titanium Demo AV (www.pandasoftware. c o m), run a scan on the hard drives (all installed drives), before the install, when it prompts to remove or clean the file do so. And any other virus files. If you have a competing firewall installed it may ask you to uninstall it, you can do so, or you can go to msconfig and just shut off a startup fies associated w/ it and any AV you have installed also (just uncheck), then remember when you remove the Panda AV later recheck the items & restart. Also, you will be allowed 1 update of the Panda after the scan & install...do so and rescan after setting to full scan deepest possible settings. Also run an online bitdefender scan at www.bitdefender.c o m (remove the spaces in c o m)

Good Luck.

Don't try deleting the file while in safe mode, simply rename the file with a different extension, something like 01.bmp or 01.jpeg

Once you reboot normally you should be able to delete the file.

My thanks to you all. Excellent suggestions. While waiting for replies, I found and ran a freeware ?moveonboot.exe? that did the trick. I told it what to move or in this case, delete during next boot before MS locked up files and it worked.
I appreciate everyone?s time and effort in replying.

Respectfully,
DotJock

Most files of this type can be removed by booting to the dos prompt and deleting it there.
