can?t do a rsh command from APC's sw

By jrevetie ·
I wrote a .bat file for shutting down two servers: a WINNT 4.0 and an Alpha Server Tru64 UNIX one. In this .bat file there is a shutdown -r now command to shutdown the UNIX system. It works well if I run it from the command prompt, but it does not run the rsh command when I call the .bat file from APC UPS PowerChute Business Edition.

can?t do a rsh command from APC's sw

by TimTheToolMan In reply to can?t do a rsh command fr ...

Hi,

This is likly to be a security issue. I expect you've got the ACP service running as a local administrator but you probably use a different account to initiate the rsh command from the command line.

You need to make sure that the IP proxy settings at the unix end will allow administrator access. Its been too long since I've looked at this, but I remember there is a mapping between remote account and allowed requests. I'm fairly sure rsh is one of them.

Alternatively if you've already set this up for your own account, you may be able to run the APC service under your username. But this may not work properly...

Hope this helps as I've made a few assumptions and my memory is a bit vague at the unix end...

Cheers,
Tim.

REMOTE COMMAND TO SHUTDOWN APC UPS

It is a bit difficult but you can do it following instructions in the attached doc. One of them is the ushutbak script who contains details steps to follow. ushutauth contains instructions on how to setup proper users authorisations (for step 5 in ushutbak).

As indicated in the UNIX doc of APC software PowerChute, a user pwrchute must be created, assuming $HOME to be in /home/pwrchute.

I will send you the script by email...
Please provide it to me b/c the Answer facility of Techrepublic is limited to 1930 char.

Good luck.
