Cant do "ls" in ftp thru ISA Server

By elemzy ·
i have ISA server as a proxy.
when i do ftp either from a client behind the proxy, or from the proxy itself to an external ftp server, i could connect but i cant list directories (ls) it returns with error " ftp: bind :Can't assign requested address ".
can anyone tell me whta the problem is, i think its a restriction either from the isa or the cisco 2600 router that goes to our isp. i think its prot 20 that needs to be opened up, but how do i do that on the isa?

Usually only port 21 inbound/outbound need to be opened for FTP however you can open port 20 for FTP if needed. You can open FTP ports in ISA server through the ISA management console/Servers & Arrays/<your server>/Access Policy/IP Packet Filters. Choose "Create a packet filter" and the New IP packet Filter Wizard will start up. Just follow the Wizard instructions to create FTP port 20 in and out & FTP port 21 in and out packet filters allow rule.

Also check to make sure your router allows inbound & outbound port 20 and port 21 traffic.

If you are behind an ISA Server, you need to install the ISA client on the workstation in order to get FTP to work properly. HTTP usually works without it, but FTP has been a real problem in my experience and often ends up acting just like you are describing if the ISA client is not installed.

There are also two modes of FTP: active and passive and that can cause some problems. See Technet 300641 for how to configure ISA for passive connections.

Finally, there are some interesting interactions between IE and ISA Server (see TechNet 814473 for example).

But I think I would start with the ISA Client and go from there. It would be pretty unusual for the router to be the problem in a case like this unless someone was playing with the FW/IDS feature set or had explicitly denied ports 20/21.

regards,

paul
