Can’t download internet web pages.

Hi, friends… please accept a question from a newbie. I’ve tried my best, with no result.
** PC configuration **
Windows98 4.10.1998A // IE6 // Firefox 1.5 // Thunderbird 1.5
** Symptoms **
1.- When I try to open web pages with IE, process does stop just after (correct) name resolution. With Firefox I have full page opened sometime, but often I can succeed only little by little using “(page) update” control, whereas other times it tries for a while hence gives me info that the connection was interrupted.
2.- Thunderbird is working: I receive my mail and also can see web pages (e.g. those related to TechRep RSS)
3.- Downloading files within IE or Firefox is not possible. Using Leechget instead, I can see quite a low value of download rate (only 4-5KBs vs previous >80KBs) and download stopping after 20-30KB (I could reach full download pausing and re-activating it many times).
** Elements of analisys **
AD-Aware scan (safe mode) = 2 tracking coockies from bravenet (cleaned – no effect on my problem)
Spyboot S&D (safe mode) = indows.ActiveDesktop:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop\NoChangingWallpaper!=W=0(cleaned – no effect on my problem – IT REAPPEARS AFTER NEW OS START !!)
Kaspersky A/V= Real Time Mail Protection >> Error starting task
Bootlog.txt= Load vxd >> NDIS2SUP.vxd >> Failed
INITCOMPLETE >> SDVXD >> Failed
Dynamic vxd upload >> NAAPI.vxd >> Failed
ipconfig /all: Unable to read window-content (closing just after task completion)
IE helpers (ActiveX and BHO): noting changed vs previous (working) conditions.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance !
