Can't enter IP address in Network Prop's

By AlwaysLearning ·
I am running Windows 98 Second Edition and currently, I can't enter IP addresses, Wins Addresses or Gateway addresses into the Network Neighborhood properites. The fields are empty, but when I attempt to click into them or tab to them, my system just makes a noise and I am unable to enter any address information. I have tried removing all network entries and then recreating them, but that didn't help. I also tried re-loading Windows. Could this be a corrupt Windows file? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, it is a toggle and in order to enter a Wins address (of which I need to enter two Wins addresses), I have to uncheck enable DHCP. Thanks for the thought though.

I don't know if you've tried this or not but Windows 98SE has a nice little hidden program called System File Checker. To use, go to Start/Run then type in SFC. Next, select the Scan For Altered Files option (default) and hit Start. Now, you willneed your Windows 98 cd on hand or if your cab files (which are sometimes in c:\windows\options\cabs.) This may find corrupt files and fix your problem.

Cheers,

Krunch

Yes, I had tried running SFC and it didn't find any altered files. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If you reinstalled Windows and you still are not able to enter info in Network Neighborhood, try another network card. Also, you mentioned that you removed all of the entries in Network Neighborhood, remove everything and restart before you try to add the entries back.

See if you are able to get info from winipcfg. Start\Run\winipcfg

Hope this gives you somemore ideas if it doesn't work.

I tried checked winipcfg and found that the wins addresses and gateway that I need to add at the network properties (where I have blank address entries for these items) list the correct addresses. I did a release and renew and the addresses do not go away. However, when I check the network properties, the addresses don't show up. I also tried another network card and then removing the entries in the network neighborhood. When I restarted my system, the TCPIP protocol had been automatically added to my network properties and I still can't enter any addresses.

Do you know how I can delete the network address entries for wins and gateway that appear to be hardcoded somewhere on my system?

You might want to check out the registry.
Access it by running "regedit"

The Network Properties information appear to be located in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Class\NetTrans\xxxx
where xxxx is some number.
Check out this section and see if you can configure your IP address through it.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

I checked and you are right that the properties are located here. However, when I add the appropriate information, it still doesn't show-up at the Network Neighborhood properties, or allow me to change network address entries.

Question(s)
your using static addressing ? but you are also setting wins addresses (to an NT box ?), if you do have an NT server why aren't you using DHCP anyway ?
You said that you were getting wins addresses and gateway addresses (from winipcfg)that were correct ? that would imply that they ARE being picked up from DHCP, you also said that renewing them didn't make them go away (do you mean they were correctly newed, or that the renew failed. Try a release then renew)
Try booting without a network connection, to see if you still the get the same numbers.
What IP are you getting in winipcfg and what are you trying to set ?

Post me a comment or two to answer those and we'll carry on from there

A.C.
