Can't erase the partition

By jtpaderes ·
Good day!

I have a Compaq Presario 5182 with Quantum 5.25 Series TS 6.4AT Bigfoot with an OS of Windows 98. Now my problem is, I suppose to re-partition this hard drive and re-install my OS. I still have my Restoration CD but when I used this one, at the middle of the installation, it displays an error that a certain file is cannot be found. So I decided to use a third party re-partitioning program like Partition Magic and BootNG. I also used FDISK (DOS, but when I boot-up to take effect the re-partition. It boots but STILL on the same partition (the drive C & D) and no changes. i check the partition, it has a Primary, Extended and a logical "SYSTEM_SAVE" partition.
I really need to re-partition and re-install my OS. So if ever you guys have a great idea and suggestions. Can you please share it with me. Thank you in advance.

Try booting from a Windows 98 boot disk (download here if you need to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm), Fdisk and remove all partitions, reboot. Fdisk and set the active partition. Then from the DOS prompt, format c: /s, reboot with your setup CD.

It could be something that protect your data on hdd. Could be a program. Try to put your hdd like slave on other computer and choose format.

Thanks but I already used the Win 98 boot disk, try the FDISk, erase all existing partition, restart the PC and proceed to the formatting of the created partition but when I try to issue a DIR command, the old file, system and partition is still intact. whew! hehe..

That happened to me once, and I ended up downloading and running the utility from the hard drive manufacturer to reset the drive to its original condition when shipped from the factory.

Maxtor purchase Quantum and you can find drive utilities from the Maxtor site. Download the maxblast iso and burn it to a CD. Boot your compaq from this CD and low level format your drive. Maxblast has 2 low level format functions. The quick (just writes zeros to the first and last megabytes of the hard drive), and the full (writes zeros to entire disk) low level format. Low level formatting will delete ALL information as well as PARTITIONS on a drive... essentially wiping the drive.

I already tried the Seagate DM and used it ZERO FILL and LOW LEVEL Function, but still when I boot up, its opposite of what I expect, the partitions and the files are still intact. But I'll try the latest suggestions/answers. Thanks guys.

Hi,
I had that problem once, and found that I had to
delete the partitions one at a time. Using FDISK
I deleted the logical part. first, rebooted, then
deleted the extended part., then rebooted and
deleted Primary part. and reboot. Then was able to
create new partition and format. Hope that helps
you out.
