Can't even install windows 98

By vtp ·
AMD K6 II 500, Sound on mother board, ATI Rage Pro 128 Video, 128 Ram, 12 Gig nightmare.
I was having problems with VXD blue screens and thought it was the video card. Replaced it with the one listed above and it worked fine except still had VXD blue screens. I had 4 or 5 programs open and the machine crashed and would not start again. Decided to format and start over. When loading win 98 everything is fine until it starts loading drivers, then VXD errors. I can start in safe mode. I go in tomsconfig and remove system.ini and it boots in normal mode. Help please!

The VxD error is being caused by the processor, you have to remove the jumper on the mother board to under clock the processor until you get the OS installed then you re-jumper it to the correct CPU speed.Go to microsoft knowledge base for fix to this problem.

I do agree with answer 1, however I had this problem with the 550, not the 500.

I would be more suspect of the cache on the chip, baybe try disabling that and see what kind of results you get. You'll probobly get at least one blue screen over a pweriod indicating it'ssomething other then that.

Good luck to you

Mark

Some motherboard drivers seem to clash with
some ATI video drivers. You don't say at
which point loading the drivers you get the
VXD errors. You could try installing W98
without the motherboard drivers and with the
ATI card drivers or the other way round (i.e.
with the motherboard drivers and without the
ATI card drivers). Win98 should be able to
provide its own drivers.

If you can boot up normally, having removed the system.ini file, I would go back in and replace the system.ini file, but with only a few things checked. Reboot. Go back in and add a few more items. Repeat until the system fails. That will help you find the actual point of failure.

I would bet that the answer lies somewhere in the interaction between your motherboard and that video card.

Here is what I would do:

1) Check Mobo manufacturer's web site for BIOS upgrades. Apply any that may be required.
2) Check for any chipset driver updates.
3) Get current drivers for the vid card, and consider replacing it (MHO, ATI sucks). I recommend nVidia TNT and 3dfx VooDoo3 for this type of application.

Step 1 - boot in dos mode edit the hidden file bootlog.prv and view and failed drivers.

Step 2 - go into your bios and diable the sound card nd any advanced settings i.e. system and video cache and IDE prefetch.

Step 3 - reboot in safe mode, go into device manager and remove EVERYTHING. reboot normally and let windows autodetect hte devices.

Step 4 - go back into the bios and turn on the item you diabled one by one. If the system still fails on the vxd please post which vxd it is failing one so I can identify which device is failing.

Thanks.
