    Can’t fdisk, please help

    Locked

    by mslaffsalot ·

Long story made short…a friend was given a pc wit a lot of junk on it. She brought it over for me to reformat. I think fdisk and format, right? Wrong! I got a message to change the stacks in config.sys and then it gave me the fdisk screen. I deleted the partition, restarted w/out CD assist, and when you type in a command now. it just sits there and does nothing. PLEASE HELP!!!

This appears to be a duplicate question, but here it is again–Get your write protected DOS Boot diskette out of wherever you keep it and use it to boot up thie PC. Then use the Format/fdisk on the diskette to complete your project. After which you can attempt to load Windows 9x on the PC. Hopefully you have a startup diskette for the Windows CD that you are going to use as well as the proper CD Driver if Windows startup cannot identify and load one. Good Luck-Steve

Been there, done that, and it still doesn’t boot. Well, it does now, I did a step by step confirmation during boot and have it booting but I have a conflict between my floopy and CD drive. When they are both hooked up, win98 hangs when booting. Thanks for the help, though.

My first question would be what brand is the pc? Secondly try format c: /s this will sys the drive and might help find any errors on the drive. You can also add the switch /v which will verify the drive as it is formating. Hope this helps some. Let me know if you need anything else.

It’s an Acer pc. I’ve done everything else you suggested and I did a step by step confirmation during boot and have it booting but I have a conflict between my floopy and CD drive. When they are both hooked up, win98 hangs when booting.
I’ve just been too tired and busy to finish figuring it out. If you have any ideas, I’d appreciate it.

I would obtain a new boot disk with a known good copy of fdisk then boot to it and do it again. Tell me again how you acces the command prompt with no operating system loaded? the only way I can think of is through a boot disk. If this is true a fresh boot disk should solve the problem,,,good luck

No it wasn’t just a boot disk, mine worked, at least on the other 3 machines inhouse (I tested them.) I ended up going to http://www.bootdisk.com and downloading the ultimate boot disk that has a lot of tweaks on it. But I’m still not out of the woods, yet. See the above replies.

Does thr hard disk make the right noises when starting up? If so, then has it been recognised in the bios? When you load fdisk from the boot disk, use option 4 to ensure the partition is deleted, then use option 1 to create a new partition.

HD sounds fine and I did the whole fdisk thing. You’re right that it had to do with the BIOS.
