Can't find 32.vxd. file.

By okippiko ·
During startup I get this message, "program not found, windows cannot find file 32.vxd.
This program needed for opening files of type
'application'" Can you plese give me some insight on what I can do to solve this problem? I would appreciate it. Thanks,

I think the system is looking for vmm32.vxd, not 32.vxd. Try either booting in safe mode if you can and then running START/FIND the above file, or into DOS and try locating this file. If you find it, copy it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory where Windows expects to find it.

If you don't have this file, or you do and it looks corrupt, you can get another copy here: http://web.dreamsoft.com/jjcesari/vmm32vxd/home.htm

I agree with Clover, although, if it's not a windows system file, a program was probably removed incorrectly. If it's a file required for a program recently removed, do a regedit search for the file. Backup your registry before doing so, of course. Then delete any entries associated with this particular file. That will get rid of the error if Clover's solution doesn't work.

If the actual name of the file is "files32.vxd" then it's time to update your virus software. This is part of the PrettyPark.Worm virus, more info at http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/prettypark.worm.html
If you need a virus scanner, you can get a good free one at www.antivirus.cai.com

Len, vxd files are like software drivers for the registry for a certain piece of hardware. If you install a piece hardware in your computer or these days I think even external USB devices would apply you can get these errors when on boot up the Registry doesn't see all the devices it believes are critical to have on boot. 95% of the time for me it is that I installed a network card and the drivers on the setup disk were incorrect or did not load correctly. I have also messed up these files added and taking away protocals like netbeui or TCPIP. Unlike software where you can go to the add/remove programs utility and disable the software install the VxD files and WMM32 files donot unintall when the board is gone if windows felt it was important component. I hope it is a network card you are having problems with because you can fix those the easiest.
