Can,t find cd rom drive

After installing win 98 operating system everything was ok with cd rom usable, but having
installed the driver for thumb drive(usb storage media) the thumb drive was usable but the cd rom drive missing unless I reinstall win 98 OS again
but this time the thumb drive couldn,t be used.
Please help me solve this problem,thanks.

I haven't done this under 98 but in general do the following.
--Reboot the system.
--insert the thumb drive.
--in device manager, fint the thumb drive under drives. go to properties and look for a drive letter assignment. choose an unused drive letter to assign to this device. Accept and exit out to the desktop.
--reboot the system.
The thumb drive should appear as the new drive letter you selected.

What I believe you need is the drivers for the chip-set on your motherboard.

Windows 98 came with a poor set of built-in drivers.

Once you install the IDE and USB controller drivers from the motherboard, system, or chip-set manufacture, all devices should work properly.
