Can’t find source of Chrome pop-up

    by tim55637 ·

    Hi all,

Former IT guy here that is the default support guy for family, friends, and neighbors. I have run into a Chrome pop-up that I can’t overcome. When browsing sites, a new tab will pop up that suggests it is McAfee and that a virus was found. The web address alternates, but is most frequently basicfundamentals.co. I did all the standard chrome cleaning, and have tried blocking the sites within chrome. I searched my registry and the contents of all my files for basicfundamentals to see if that might find something, but it didn’t. I have run Vipre, Malwarebytes, and Spybot S&D and it’s not finding anything. I installed Guardio.io and was thrilled that it found the issue on the initial installation scan. However, it’s not resolved.
Now my browsing page is frequently being replaced with a Guardio warning that it blocked a pop-up for the exact same issue. All that really did was replace the content of interruption. It didn’t remove it.

Any thoughts on what to do next? Unfortunately I paid for Guardio as I thought it was the solution. I could keep going through AV software but I’m not sure what all will scan AND fix for free. Many want you to pay for the resolution. AVG? Total AV?

What about uninstalling Chrome? I’ve neve done that as a solution before, I’ve always found the issue. My concern is that that source won’t get uninstalled with Chrome and I’m not sure what all to clean up.

      That’s common scareware.

And the source is the web page you visited. It rarely infects your PC but again, common scareware and YOU CAN’T FIX THIS as it’s on the web and not on your PC.

It’s happening with new Chrome sessions no matter what site I visit, and with only that site open. News, sports sites, etc.

Suggestion: Clear the browser cache and if doesn’t work, delete the browser and re-install it.

Thank you. I cleared all cache several times. Just a moment ago I uninstalled Chrome, rebooted, and re-installed. We will see if that makes a difference.

I believe uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome may have resolved my issue. I haven’t gotten enough time on the computer for it to be definitive, but it’s looking hopeful.

I cleared the browser history, cookies, etc from the beginning of time . It still didn’t help and I uninstalled Chrome, started fresh and after a day the same site basicfundamentals.co.in opened in a new tab while i was just casually browsing. How is this possible ? I have taken steps to make sure the settings of chrome don’t allow notifications from any site as well as blocked ads from displaying from any site.

          Three things to try:
          1. Does it happen also in Chrome in a new Windows account in your PC?
          2. Does it happen also in other browsers (like Edge, Firefox, Opera)?
          3. Does it happen also when you (for test purposes) rename the Chrome-folder in your Appdata\Local\Google folder. You can always rename it back, of course, so it doesn’t harm at all.
