Can't format D on New Drive = RAM dr.

By staycmartin ·
I have installed a new 30.7 GB hard disk and partitioned it into two drives: C: = 20GB, = 9333MB I have formatted C: and was able to install Windows with no problem. However, I cannot format . The computer sees it as the (DOS)RAM drive. How can I fix this? Thank you in advance!

First off, what win version?
Did you partition using fdisk or partioning sw like pqmagic?
If you used fdisk I'm assuming it, ( second part.) is an extended one?
Try running fdisk from a fdd boot disk & making sure that the second part. is shown as extended, if not delete & recreate as one. Try formatting out of windows, this should work. Good luck!

Sorry, "someonewhocares", I'm working off of the question. Not trying to belittle other techs. Format unconditional? Why, there is nothing on the drive! Volume label? I must be getting old because I was just going off of personal experience. I must have forgotten about the default "RAM drive", that a fresh install of windows will create with your second partition, not just the boot disk rd. I also thought that fdisk would not let you exit if you forgot the logical!? Silly me :^)
P.S. Stacymartin I apologize for my appended comments while you still have your problem unsolved.

If you are using Windows NT or Win2k, find the Disk Administrator utility. You will need to create the partition, commit changes and format the new partition, and lastly change the drive letter if you wish.

Somehow, the config.sys file got copied from the setup boot disk, or you are booting from a bootdisk. RamDisk is normal and part of DOS since version 4. I suspect the second partition has no logical drives defined, only the extended partition. Rename c:\config.sys to config.xyz and the same for autoexec.bat to autoex.xyz; reboot to dos prompt only. Run fdisk, option 4, view details, and make sure the second partition has logical drive(s) defined. If yes, escape out without changes then run format d /u /v:labelnamehere .... if not defined, do it; reboot to dos prompt only again, run format, done. If you need more info, please post a comment, or email direct ...

While the first two answers had pointers to useful info, both chose to miss the reference to the workings of ramdrive.sys. I find it strange that such basic DOS programs and functions are forgotten, even though both win9x and NT are ruled by them ...
