Can't get DSL working

By sparent ·
I've got high-speed internet at home, using a DSL modem. My ISP assigns all the TCP/IP settings: gateway, IP address, ...

It works fine on my laptop using the PCMCIA NIC card.

It works fine on a second computer using a 3Com NIC.

I can't seem to get a NIC working in my son's machine. I've even pulled the 3Com out of the second machine and tried it in the misfit! So far, we've tried three different NICs!

We install a NIC in the machine (W98), the driver gets bound to TCP/IP. When I try to use WINIPCFG, I usually get Can't access IP configuration! We have managed to assign an local IP address using the NIC diagnostics. But, even though we can see the IP address in WINIPCFG, we can't release it, let alone have my ISP renew it!

We've tried moving the card to a different slot and we've tried re-installing TCP/IP.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like it may not be the NIC ;-) but does it show as enabled or as a yellow exclamation point in the device manager?

Elimate the obvious/most likely first:

1. Replace the cable with one that you know works - or move the machine to a knowngood location if you don't have a spare/moveable cable.
2. You say "usually get Can't access IP configuration!". Does this mean that sometimes you can?
3. Are you going through a hub or a NAT router or what? I haven't seen any xDSL modems with multiple LAN ports. Knowing this would help the troubleshooting.
4. Triple-check all the software configurations.

We use to get the yellow exclamation mark. Moving the card to a new slot got the PnP to use a different IRQ.
1. I am using a known good cable.
2. I couldn't get WINIPCFG to open up at first. That's where the "usually" comes from!
3. It's a singleport ADSL modem. I just move the cable off one machine unto another. (Works with the first 2!)
4. Done that!

What other devices are "sharing" the irq that the nic is on? Network adapters tend to behave better when they are not sharing resources with any othe resource intensive card (video card or sound card, etc). Place the nic on it's own irq. Then it should work properly.

Already did that. When we moved the card into a different slot it went from IRQ 12 to 11 and now doesn't appear with the yellow bang in Device Manager.

Is it possible that you cannot release the IP via winipcfg because the IP is hard-coded into the NIC's properties?

There is a command line equivalent for winipcfg. Try:
"ipconfig/release_all "
or
"ipconfig/release"
(I do not have access to a win98 box at the moment so syntax may be a little off - type ipconfig/? for parameters)

Try completely removing the NIC, then the TCP/IP stack and all network components then re-install them. It is not unheard of that the stack has gone "bad". Thefact that you have trouble even opening winipcfg leads me to suspect this.

Finally, I would try hard-coding the parameters into the problem machine. Copy the settings from a working machines winipcfg results and enter them manually into the problem box. (disable DHCP in other words)

How old is the PC?
