Can’t get DSL working

by sparent . Updated 25 years, 1 month ago

I’ve got high-speed internet at home, using a DSL modem. My ISP assigns all the TCP/IP settings: gateway, IP address, …

It works fine on my laptop using the PCMCIA NIC card.

It works fine on a second computer using a 3Com NIC.

I can’t seem to get a NIC working in my son’s machine. I’ve even pulled the 3Com out of the second machine and tried it in the misfit! So far, we’ve tried three different NICs!

We install a NIC in the machine (W98), the driver gets bound to TCP/IP. When I try to use WINIPCFG, I usually get Can’t access IP configuration! We have managed to assign an local IP address using the NIC diagnostics. But, even though we can see the IP address in WINIPCFG, we can’t release it, let alone have my ISP renew it!

We’ve tried moving the card to a different slot and we’ve tried re-installing TCP/IP.

Any help would be appreciated!
