Can't get into my pc without installing windows xp, which I don't have key?

By dorrisgurl ·
Someone please read and help. I already tried calling windows xp customer support, but they could not help me at all. I have lost my windows xp product key, and I was going to use a program to search my pc for the product key, but I can't get into my computer at all. I have tried f-10 but nothing is working and I can't get past the windows xp install screen. Is there any way to get into my computer to download the product key finder? If not I will have to find a way to get a new tower, which I have no money for at the moment. Someone please HELP!

TechRepublic members will not help recover passwords...

The members of TechRepublic - A Resource for IT Professionals, will not assist anyone in the recovery of lost passwords. You may have a legitimate reason to recover a password. However, we cannot verify your motives and will therefore not assist in what may be an attempt at gaining unauthorized access to a computer system. Due to the open nature of this forum, any assistance given to help circumvent security measures, even for legitimate purposes, would be available for unscrupulous individuals to use for illegitimate purposes. This is a risk that we the members of TechRepublic will not take. Please do not ask questions of this nature on TechRepublic. If you have a legitimate need to circumvent a password scheme, please contact the vendor for the software/ hardware and request their assistance. E.g. Windows XP password recovery issues should be taken up with Microsoft's technical support, Phoenix BIOS password recovery issues should be taken up with Phoenix Technologies, etc.. The Product Key which you need is on a Sticker on the case

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Can't get into my pc with ...

It is a 25 Digit String of Letters and Numbers set in 5 groups of 5.

It's just a matter of reading it off the COA and entering it into the box when asked.

If this is an Off the Shelf System from one of the system makers like Dell, HP or whoever you can contact the system maker for a Recovery Set. Unless you have a Retail Copy of Windows Microsoft is unable to offer any help to you in matters like this.

What have you done so far?

by JIMC1977 In reply to Can't get into my pc with ...

so I'm going to make a few assumptions, you let me know whats right.

To get the XP install screen to come up, You have to have started the install process.
If you have started the install process then the installer has already overwritten the section of the HD that the Product information was stored in. This could make recovery more difficult. Assuming that you have no system back-up, restarting your computer into your old OS to retrieve the key may be impossible, as the data is lost. There is one other hope, but I will need to know a few things first.

What disk/cd did you use to do this, or was this a recovery partition?
Are you starting the computer with the cd still in it?
Does you computer have an authenticity sticker? *note Provided you are using the correct version of OS install disk or the recovery partition, this key should work.

What type of computer is this? Laptop/ Desktop? HP/Dell/????

All is not lost in any case,
