can’t get mic to record in winxp pro

Can anyone tell me how i can configure to get my mic to record. I know the mic is good i tested it on another pc. I have via vt82c686b chipset and i don’t have the driver cd that came with the system board so i am not sure what are the correct ausio drivers are and how tell if it is intalled properly in my xp. I have sound from my speakers and cd work i just can’t figure out how to make mic work. Ihave used microsoft trouble shooting guid but ti did not help. I wold also be greast ful if youy can tell me what are the correct procedure in downloading drivers , saving them and installing them?
