Can't Get Online

I have a work laptop running XP pro with SP2. The laptop that previously to SP2 would connect to the internet, now won't. It connects to an ethernet, and other laptops can connect thru the same line. None of the settings were changed, and the user lost the restore CD. Any ideas how to get it to connect?

Several questions here.

Can you ping your internet gateway (Router, proxy server, etc.) by both name and IP address? If not, then run the command:

IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS

Can you ping an external name, such as TechRepublic and resolve it by both IP address and name? If not, then check to see where the client is losing connectivity with the tracert command.

Is the firewall on the PC turned on?

This could easily be the issue.

Some additional details on your issue would assist in offering potential solutions.

Do you connect to the internet through your network or is it a dedicated line?

If through your network have you verified your IP settings and subnet mask?

Is it wireless or landline?

ipconfig /all

Make sure there are results for DNS. If not, check the results on the other computers and manually enter those addresses in your connection TCP/IP settings.

If DNS server addresses are set to manual already, with no addresses supplied, that is your problem

Are you using this work laptop at home and can't get connected? If so, is your employer using a proxy server? Then, change your proxy settings in IE Properties>Connections>Lan Settings. Uncheck "Proxy Server"
