    Can’t Get USB to Work

    Locked

Oops, I accidently closed this question.
I have a Dell Latitude CPi notebook computer. I have just loaded Windows 98 Upgrade on the system. I can’t get the USB controller, root hub, etc. to show in device manager. The Dell web site says it uses the”Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Host Controller”. I have specically loaded this controller and a root hub but still can’t get the USB to work. I have the latest BIOS. Any ideas to get this to load????

      Only suggestions I have…

First make sure there’s a option in the bios that doesn’t have this disabled. I’ve seen some boards that have it disabled by default.

Look in the hard drive controller section or the system devices and look for the intel devices. The usb controller should have the same number. Do not load the root hub, if the host was loaded correctly, The system should recognize that when it reboots.

Although 98 should have support for a usb, maybe there wasn’t a driver or a file loaded on the system, so possably running the usb supplment from MS may put in the correct file. When I load the drivers for those, I always get a message for a file called uhcd.vxd (or maybe it was uhcd.sys) which relies in the windows\system directory or wondows\system\iosubsys directory.

I eneded up finding another laptop that was working with win98 and exported all things in the registry dealing with USB or the adapter. When I did this the controller was in device manager. When I tried to start it I got a blue screen. When I removed it from safe mode it would detect it but get a blue screen whe it tried to start it. I renamed all instances of UHCD.SYS and reinstalled Win 98 over the top of itself and all is working fine.

        Thanks for the UHCD.sys clue.

Check in your Device Manager for a yellow question mark Other Devices. If this exists then open it up and go to Properties for the Other Device. Try to change or update the driver for this Other Devices using the drivers for the USB. Then it should indicate that it find new hardware (your USB) and you can install the drivers for that. This should get your USB to work. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Windows 98SE has USB support in the OS. Windows 98 Upgrade doesn’t really do that (even though you have drivers, getting it to work is a pain).

I would throw 98 Second Edition on there and cross my fingers.

It was Windows 98 SE Upgrade. I needed to keep the current apps. intact. I figured out a solution. Read number 1 above.
