Can’t get Windows to setup on computer

by jkrepka . Updated 24 years, 10 months ago

I have a problem that I don’t understand. While setting up a
>new computer, using a Windows 98 startup disk, I was able to partition
>and format the hard drive. When I try to install Windows 98 or Windows
>ME, it starts to install, does the routine check on the system, goes
>through the scandisk and then when it says “copying files needed for
>Windows setup” it freezes up. The only way to unfreeze is to reset or
>power off. It does this every time. I have tried 3 different Windows
>98 CD Roms, 2 Windows ME CD Roms and the same thing happens. Any idea what would cause this
>problem?
>I have tried different memory, different hard drive, different CD Rom,
>different floppy drive, reseated the CPU, tried a different CPU. I thought it might be the
>secondary IDE controller, so I put the hard drive as master and the CD
>Rom as slave on the primary IDE controller and still the same problem. I
>have also changed all the ribbon cables. HELP!!!!!
