I have a windows 98 PC that is currently set to DHCP. I need to change to a static IP address & subnet. Then input gateway and DNS settings.
I have done this hundreds of times so my question has nothing to do with how to complete what I mentioned. My question is about a strange behavior that occurs when attempting to make these changes.
Here’s what happens. I click on the button that allows you to specify an IP address. Then when I click in the place where the address is input,
IP Adress: __.__.__.__
There is no response and nothing can be typed in the area. The cursor will not show in the spaces.
In case for some reason the fonts where set to white or something, I used the tab key to move around and typed in the info. Butwhen I clicked apply it lets me know that nothing was entered.
Just in case, I’ve changed desktop and folder settings to the Windows default.
Scanned for virus with current dat file.
I’ve manually uninstalled all networking features, including renaming and extracting associated files with new ones from the CD. Removed the settings from the registry as explained in a Microsoft article.
Recent changes to the system was uninstall of MSN Internet Explorer and Netscape. Install of Action Tech DSL Gateway. The PC will connect to the Internet using DHCP but as long as this behavior continues I know there something wrong and this may be only part of a worse. So I’d like to correct the problem.
By the way formating and starting over’s not an option.
Does anyone have any ideal of what can cause this and more so how to fix?
