    Can’t install Microsoft updates

    Locked

    by sbhuck ·

I am in the process of burning everything having to do with IE5.5SP2 before Microsoft’s cutoff date 12/31/2003. In the course of this hunt, I have located 7 Critical or Security updates which I did not know about. Part of this problem is that Windows Update web site does not always recognize that I am using IE5.5SP2, and wantme go use IE6 which was the majority oppinion of everyone on this web site that I dump IE6 as fast as possible, therefore, Windows Update failed to tell me about these 7 updates I found through other Microsoft download sites. The problem is this, I downloaded the 7 updates, but when I go install them, It tells me I must be using IE5.5SP2 to install them. As as I have been telling Microsoft Customer help for that last three days, I am using IE 5.5SP2. So far ther responses have been a big joke, and I will not bore you with them. Let be enough to say that they know how to gather material, but they know little about answering a question.
In May, 2003 I had an update 810847 which caused the same problem. Customer Service collected everything but my first born, and said the problem was mine, but just a minute a tech person at Microsoft sent me an email with a method for getting these types of updates successfully installed. His method worked, but I have miss placed his email, and so far microsoft has not found it either, if they have even looked. Does anyone know how to get these updates installed?
I am sure that unlike Microsoft you will give me and answer and not some answer which looks like you never read the question, because from some of the questions and suggestions I am getting from Microsoft, apparently, they do not read your email before the MATERIAL COLLECTION BEGINS!!!
Thanks I needed to vent that. If anyone is really interested in the type of gobblegook I have been getting from Microsoft feel free to email me and i will provide you with some good laughs.

      Hi Wilbur,

Thanks for the compliment on your last answer acceptance.

You are among the peers that I take the time to always look at your questions, and may do a little extra research if I an not sure what the answer is.

Anyway, as I recall, some of the patches for IE5.5 SP2 are only for Windows 2000 systems.

Also, some patches are superseded by a following patch. If the download details say that a patch is cumulative, it likely supersedes many older patches. If you have some newer patches installed, an older patch may not install.

I usually install patches in the order that they were released to avoid an older patch undoing what a newer patch fixed.

In addition to the patch, I save either the download details page, the Technet article on the bug, or a text file with details on the patch.

I have the following IE 5.5 SP2 patches stored:
      306121
      312461
      316059
      319182
      321232
      323759
      324929
      328389
      328970
      330994
      810847 2 versions
      813489
      818529

I just installed IE5.5SP2 on a system this weekend, and do not recall any errors from the patches.

Have you tried using the Windows Update catalog?

      http://tinyurl.com/gh3o

I find it very useful, as it will list ALL patches for a supported OS sorted by your choice of title or date.

Yes, I agree with you, MS (and most other) software tech support systems are a real pain!

        Another side comment:

Since Microsoft has placed IE 5.5 into the extended support phase, Windows Update will be set to have you install IE 6.
Ie 6 SP2 has most of the fixes for IE 5.5 built-in.
After installing IE6, if you run update again, it will find the patches for IE6 that are needed.

In your situation this is a problem, as you want / need to stay with IE 5.5 for hardware issues.
Your only option is to use the TechNet or downloads page and manually capture the updates you need.

I could e-mail you my copy of the update.

Chas I also trying to store these patches, but they will not install because they do not recognize I am using IE 5.5 SP2. The actual numbers of my version according to Aida 32 are:
5.50.4807 .2300 (IE5.5SP2). Is this the same version you have? The real puzzle is that at one time a Microsoft Tech sent me an email with a method of installing 810847 when I had this ame problem before. Let me know what you can find out about our two IE 5.5 SP2’s

Patch 328389,328970,319182,316059, and 312461 do not seem to exits on MS site.
      Other patches are okay.
      Did I miss something?

Chas did you get a chance tocompare my version of IE5.5SP2 with yours? I know what you mean about one update serving to really cover several. Update 810847 actually covers,
      313675
      316059
      319182
      321232
      323759
      328970
According to Microsoft sight, but I can not install any it replaces, and I can not install 810847 becuase it refuses tho recognize my IE5.5SP2. Back in May, this is the update which befan all the trouble, and this is the update which a TECH support person sent me the method to do this. All I can remember is that you had to copy to somewhere else, and then usse Start>run? and that is all I can remember.

From the answer 2, it seems that perhaps sdcphoneguy just found out there are many updates that sjould show up on Windows Update if you are running IE5.5SP2. For his knowledge, go to the following web site and begin at the begining and check each update to see if they are ones you should have gotttn or need:
http://microsoft.com/technet/security/current.asp?frame=true, you will be amazed at what you find that you needed and did not know about.
I donot knnow if sdcphoneguy is using IE5.5SP2 or not , but he will get a real eyeopener.

      Hi Wilbur,

      Interesting problem.
The only problem I have ever had installing updates is when an update claims to be for a different version of IE.

      Here is what I have:

      IE 5.5 SP2, 5.50.4807.2300

This is from downloading IE 5.5 SP2 shortly after it was released.

From the Belarc Advisor utility, here is the list of installed updates:

As stated, I subscribe to the TechNet Security Bulletin, and download patches as they are released.
I save them all, and burn them to CD as needed for setting up systems.

As to problems installing updates: Have you closed ALL open programs including your virus scanner and any fire-wall programs?
Some open applications interfere with the installation of patches.

What Microsoft likely told you to do, was to use an archive extrication program and extract the file(s) from the patch.

Some files, you would simply replace with the new version.
Other files may be registry patches that would need to be applied.

Chas we have the same IE5.5SP2, 5.50.4807.2300 (IE5.5SP2). using belarc, i have the following updates installed:
        313829
        330994
        818529
        (SP2)
Looking at your updates, here is my problem list:
        316059
        319182
        321232
        323759
        810847
        313675
        324929
328970 when downloaded and tried toinstall got “this program has committed etc”
        All of these tell me I do not have ie5.5sp2;
306121This is the download that I downloaded into My Documents, and when I tried to open My Documents i got the “program has performed an illegal operation etc.”
        This the program which you helped get rid of using method involving A:Dos prompt;
        C:(press enter)
        cd mydocu~1
        dir /w
        del q306121.exe
Microsoft tried this and screwed up one of there files by downloading it.
I did find one more successful one from your list q813489, but I did not want to shutdown to impliment it because I am am answering you as much as posssible. When I tried to download q312461, it kept giving me q313675. When I have implemented q813489, if something changes, I will send a comment.
Data access q318203, you must have a need for it, and I do not.
        Windows downloads from Belarc:
        Win98.sp1
        UPD168115
        UPD238453
        Win98
        both have:
        UPD245729
        UPD314147
        UPD323172
        UPD323255
        UPD329115
        UPD811630
Directly related to running 98se youhave and I do not need:
        UPD318307
UPD329048 when I searched for it it came back can not find
I have and you do not:
        UPD259728
        UPD265334
        UPD273727
        UPD273991
UPD274113 These could be realted to me using win98.sp1 and not win98se
I think that this all the pertinent information I can give you. How both of us can have the same version of IE5.5SP2 and have such different results is not only troublesome for us, but Microsoft has been experimenting, and finding somethings we have not even experienced.
By the way, I gave microsoft your solution on how to get rid of q306121 so they coould have their file back.
If any of this makes sense, let me know.

Chas in answer to the last part of your email, I went as far as uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional, DAP, and my firewall for Microsoft, and nothing changed.
I have since reinstalled all of them.

      Hi Wilbur,

Yes, the fact that you are running W98 SP1 versus W98 SE could be at the root of ALL of your patch problems.

I know that there are patches that ONLY apply to Windows 98SE and NOT W98.

The patch installer may be looking for a file and revision level that is installed for W98 SE, and since you have a different version, the installer reports back that you do not have the correct version of IE.

If you are on a dial-up connection, and using a firewall, the security patches are not as necessary as compared to having a cable modem and leaving your PC on and connected 24/7.

Chas, I was refering to the window 98 updates, but it now seems that Microsoft has a small problem with more of us who can not get IE5.5SP2 updates to install. I now have their managers involved, this could be fun.
