By newjudi ·
I am replacing an western digtial 40gig with a new 40 gig also western digital. It boots allows me to run the WD setup CD. Then when I try to load the XP it gets to checking system screen and hangs....forever!
I put it on the new cable installed as a single , even changed the bios cylinder, head settings per the directions. It still won't work. Help!

You should just set it to "auto" rather than playing around with cylinders and heads.

What is the WD setup cd? Is that a utility used to transfer everything over to the new drive?

I've never elected to use those utilities at all. The best solution is to reinstall everything, transfer your data to the new OS...you'd be surprised at how much useless stuff you might have collected when you do a fresh install.

did you ever change ram. try to swap ram with a known good ram. do you get any memory errors. it happened with me.defective ram can let you operate windows normally but would not let you install new os.
hope this helps.

Boot up with the windows cd and remove all partitions, format the drive and let windows install. Don't let the WD cd install other things on the drive that might be what is making xp hand during setup.

Power management options disabled in the BIOS have made Windows XP fail to install?

You may have turned off the power management options in the BIOS because they were problematic, or you were advised to because they are not necessary on a desktop PC, but Windows XP requires them to be enabled or it will lock up during the installation process. The system will keep locking up at the Windows Setup screen. Just the blue screen will show - there will be no error messages, or any other kind of feedback. So, if you are having an installation problem of this kind, change the BIOS settings for ACPI Aware OS to Yes, and Power Management to "Enabled".
Moreover, if you are having problems shutting down Windows XP, or if it suspends indefinitely without turning off, use the right mouse button to click your Desktop, select Properties, click the Screen Saver tab, click the Power button,
